Ignition Interlock Devices (IIDs) in Wisconsin
Many individuals convicted of Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) in Wisconsin must install an ignition interlock device (IID)/breath alcohol ignition interlock device (BIID) on their car(s). These devices can hinder your freedom and your pocketbook. If convicted, you may have to blow into an IID every time you drive. Furthermore, you will only be able to drive vehicles with IIDs — this means that if you are a commercial driver, you will need to install an IID before you can do your job.
The Waukesha DUI/OWI ignition interlock system lawyers at Huppertz & Powers, S.C., can defend you against your OWI charges and the potential consequences, such as ignition interlock devices. Send us an e-mail or call us at 262-549-5979 to schedule a no-risk consultation. The first meeting is on us.
Who Is Required to Install an Ignition Interlock Device?
Courts must order ignition interlock devices for defendants charged with:
- OWI with an alcohol concentration of .15 or more
- OWI and refusal to submit to a blood/chemical test
- Any repeat offense OWI
If convicted, you will need to install an ignition interlock device on all vehicles that are registered in your name. Failure to install an IID is a criminal offense and can lead to six months in jail and six extra months with an IID. After installing an IID in your vehicle, you will not be able to start your car until you breathe into the IID. If you have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .02 or higher, your car will not start.
